Event : Lakeland Challenge 2011

A group involving Burnley Boys & Girls Club and Blackpool Boys & Girls Club made their way up to Ormside Mill on 11th April to take part in Lakeland Challenge, a week long adventure residential. As usual the minibus was full of anticipation of what was in store for the week ahead and was full of chat.

Once landed, everyone got to their dorms, sorted themselves and their kit out before starting a range of challenges that saw the group crossing electric fences and lava with the aim of getting to know each other. Once completed it was time for Chilli followed by Action Scrabble, a brand new activity that really gets the group active and challenging the grey matter.

A few tired heads rose from the dorms on the Tuesday morning which were soon dispelled with a host of activities before hitting the road to Angle Tarn Beck. The aim of this gorge was to go where no Ormside group had been before….. pass the waterfall and right to the top of the gorge and into the Angle Tarn. This required a huge amount of determination and teamwork which the group had in abundance as the tarn was always just round the corner!!!

After reaching the top, a well earned packed lunch was order of the day before setting off to summit Angle Pikes before returning back to the minibus and the mill for a game of football.

Wednesday saw the group involved in another new activity from Ormside, Geocaching, which sees participants hunt for ‘caches’ using gps and solving puzzles along the way. It was exped day, so the rest of the morning was spent packing, preparing and building bivvies for that nights sleep, then it was off to Penrith climbing wall for a climbing session that was full of different challenges dependent on your ability. After the session the group were driven back to the Hoff where they doned their rucksacks and navigated their way back to the mill, whilst also cooking their ration packs on stoves along the way. By the time the mill was reached is was closing in on 10pm and everyone was ready for their bivvies and the most comfortable nights sleep they had ever experienced.

Thursday involved yet more activities from Adam and also saw the group carry out some coppicing as a service to the mill whilst also providing the wood for the camp fire that night.

Before no time, it was Friday morning and we were faced with the worst part pack up and clean and returning home.

A big thanks to Adam at Ormside for providing the activities for the week, and even bigger thanks to John Melvin (Burnley B&G) & Jade Tester who supported the week by volunteering their time so the week could happen.
