Help and advice after Manchester

Information for Children and Young People and Families following the Manchester Arena Terror Incident 22nd May 2017

Following the tragic incident at the MEN Arena on the 22nd May, we recognise that many children and young people and parents/carers supporting children and young people will be shocked and saddened by what took place. Children and young people in particular may have questions and it can be difficult to know what to say.

There are approaches that support children and young people through this time more effectively which include:

• Let them know that you understand their feelings.
• Listen to children, give them the opportunity to talk if and when they want to.
• Be consistent and reassuring.
• Continue to keep routines and normal daily activities.
• Keep in touch with school/college about supporting a consistent approach.
• Keep them from seeing too much of the frightening pictures of the event.

Reaching Communities

We have started to compile the Reaching Communities bid based on the feedback we got from clubs earlier this year.

The aim of the bid is to support our clubs in a range of areas, free transport to events, recruiting and training volunteers, fully funded inter-club activities, access to free training for staff and volunteers etc and overcoming barriers to participation.

We've had feedback from 13 clubs so far but want to open up the consultation further before we submit a stage one bid to make sure we are representing all your needs. If you want to take part in the consultation please email lou@labgc.org.uk over the next 4 weeks. We look forward to hearing from you.

Building Better Opportunites

Building Better Opportunities - Invest in Youth

This is a new project that will support young people who are aged 15-24 and who are unemployed or economically inactive and not engaged in study.

To deliver this programme Selnet have formed a partnership of 45 mostly community, voluntary and social enterprise sector organisations across Lancashire who will work directly with each participant providing a range of guidance and information.

LABGC will be taking referrals for this programme from clubs and individuals across Lancashire and we will be working directly with 4 young people a year offering additional support and training. Our direct partners on this project are Rathbones and Barnardos who will provide one to one support, for young people addressing a range of often complex barriers that are specific to this age group.

If you know someone who is aged 15-24 and who might benefit from Invest in Youth, then please contact Lou Andrews at LABGC for further information and help on 01524 65106 or email lou@labgc.org.uk

On its website, MyLOL bills itself as the ‘#1 teen dating site in the US, Australia, UK and Canada’ and

claims to have more than 300,000 members around the world.
It invites users to meet ‘thousands of teenagers like you’ and then goes on to describe how users can ‘chat with members or privately with someone.’

Leapfrog: Working with young people toolbox

Lancaster University have developed a collection of 8 tools for working with young people, available online for free to anyone. We’ve seen relatively widespread use of the tools, and seen them make a real difference to some of those who’ve used them. We’ve also just released a short film about the tools, so I am reaching out to the people that work with children and young people.

A collection of award-winning, flexible, ready-to-use tools that can help anyone to engage young people in creative, inspiring and effective ways.

Each tool was co-designed by either young people in collaboration with Child Action North West and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, or by professionals who work with young people every day. The tools reflect real experiences and challenges young people face and have proven themselves in the hands of young people, youth workers and engagement professionals alike.

The tools offer a new approach to engaging young people. They give young people inspiring, creative ways to articulate their ideas, but more importantly the tools offer ways of working that fit with the way young people think and develop ideas.

For further information please contact Gemma Coupe via email at: g.coupe1@lancaster.ac.uk
