Club2Go Mobile Youth Project

This new project was launched in August 2011 with funding from Asda in relation to their OnRoute programme with support from support from Business in the Community (BITC)

We purchased a Lancashire County Council ex-library van and after consultation with young people, converted it into a mobile youth club, which is currently located in Blackpool.

The vehicle inside comprises of a lounge area at the rear, a music area with 3 laptop computers and a coffee bar counter. There are 3 internal dvd screens and a sound system. Outside of the vehicle there is a canopy and an external large screen linked to a Nintendo Wii and external speakers. The project is currently staffed by a Project leader (half-time), a sessional youth worker and driver/worker.

The aim of the project is to work alongside other agencies and engage with young people in identified neighbourhoods using the activities on the vehicle. The staff also liaise, where possible, with other local youth provisions. After developing relationships with the young people, the staff encourage young people to join up with other youth groups to offer them additional opportunities and sustainability options for when the Club2Go project moves on.

For instance, working with the Lancashire Police Youth Involvement Officer in Fleetwood, the Club2Go bus has been operating on an estate on Friday nights since last October. On average, around 50 young people have been actively engaging with the project, which is located adjacent to a multi purpose play area (MUGA). Sports workers organise different sports while Police Community Sports Officers and local residents interact with the young people. Recent evaluation meetings have indicated that not only are young people constructively engaged in positive activities, but youth nuisance calls have reduced, there is less underage drinking and young people with different 'orders' such as ASBO's are participating without displaying any negative behaviour. Furthermore, as the project has been has been supported with a staff member from Fleetwood Club for Young People, up to 6 young people have since joined their youth club and can therefore access other activities available from LABGC.

The Club2Go Project is also working within other areas of Blackpool and looking to develop the Fleetwood model as good practice for future work.
